Research Division

CircularEconomy

How to succeed in transforming the resource-intensive, linear economy into a circular economy in which the value and the raw materials contained in products are preserved in the best way possible after their usage phase? The Division Circular Economy focuses its research on this key question and develops targets and instruments for environmental services and digitalisation, which enables closed material cycles and creates the conditions for sustainable digitalisation. Following on from this, the analyses of the interplay between digitalisation and sustainability is one of the Division's main areas of its work.

The research strategy of the Division Circular Economy integrates aspects of system and target knowledge on circular economy with questions of concrete implementation strategies at an urban and regional level as well as on the national and international level. A specific focus is on digitalisation, which is to be used as an approach to resource and climate protection on the one hand but must also be made sustainable at the same time.

The Circular Economy Division is divided into three closely interlinked Research Units Digital Transformation, Circular Systems and Circular Transitions.
