First Solar Review

Review of the Report "Assessment of Performance, Environmental, Health and Safety Aspects of First Solar's CdTe Photovoltaic Technology"

  • Project no.151005
  • Duration 11/2016 - 12/2016

On behalf of the company First Solar Inc., a peer-review for assessing First Solar's cadmium telluride (CdTe) photovoltaic modules in the European context was conducted by a consortium of  scientific and technical facilities under the lead of CENER (National Renewable Energy Centre (CENER), Fraunhofer-Center für Silizium-Photovoltaik (CSP), Institut Photovoltaïque d'Ile-de-France (CNRS), Oxford Brookes University).

Also on behalf of First Solar Inc., the draft of this report was critically reviewed by the Wuppertal Institute in December 2016. The draft was reviewed particularly with regard to EHS effects of non-intended use of  CdTe PV modules during the life cycle phases (for example "worst-case" conditions considering the end-of-life disposal of CdTe modules), concerns on the global dissemination of Cadmium as well as social and ecological issues within the supply chain. Suggestions for improvements were discussed with the consortium during a conference call.
