Capacity Building for Local Environmental Protection in Nanjing

The issue of environmental protection has been receiving increasing attention in China. In this respect, regional authorities can benefit from experiences gained in Germany and Europe. In order to strengthen the urban environmental and climate protection capacities of the Bureau of Ecology and Environment of the Chinese city Nanjing, the Wuppertal Institute conducted a three-week advanced training course starting on 18 November 2019. The curriculum covered technological and political aspects. The course offered a wide range of lectures and facilitated knowledge exchange between experts from academia and practice. Excursions to companies and authorities in Germany were also part of the programme. The content of the course provided participants with a knowledge and information base to promote environmental protection in Nanjing.

The following topics were covered:

  • Environmental regulation,
  • Development of strategies to reduce CO2 emissions
  • Technologies and policies to promote energy efficiency in the business sector
  • Modern technologies to reduce pollution of air, water and soil
  • Implementation of environmental monitoring and control
  • Environmental management systems
  • Waste management
  • Monitoring and evaluation of environmental policy.
