Demythification of Sustainability: Basic Condiciton for the Social-Ecological Change

  • Project no.251836
  • Duration 03/2019 - 09/2019

Progressive climate change is one of the biggest problems of the 21st century. The latest IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) report warns that adhering to the current course will have devastating effects on global ecosystems and thus on the livelihoods of many people. The shift towards a sustainable economic and social model is therefore an imperative. In Germany, it is above all the "Energiewende" and "Mobilitätswende" that are the immediate touchstones for shaping the necessary social modernization in a socially equitable way. This change from an economic and social model that transcends our planetary borders to an economic and lifestyle model that conserves energy and resources is, however, fraught with conflict.

The resolution of this conflict of objectives is the focus of the study "Demythification of sustainability: basic condiciton for the social-ecological change", which is being prepared for the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung's foundation-wide project "For a better tomorrow" by the Wuppertal Institute as part of the project line "Sustainability". Here, the authors contribute to exposing interest-driven false claims by listing ten prominent questions from the discourse between climate scientists and climate sceptics and contrasting them with a narrative based on scientific knowledge.
