Electricity systems planners in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region are faced by tremendous challenges. On the one hand, they must ensure a reliable, cost-efficient electricity supply to cover the dramatically increasing energy demand; on the other hand, they also need to consider socio-economic and ecological aspects in their deliberations about future system development strategies. The present project sets out to initiate a participative process with local stakeholders from Morocco, Jordan and Tunisia. Methodologies from different research areas - scenario development, electricity system modeling and empirical social research - will be applied to assess options for sustainable and socially equitable energy supply in the three countries. The Wuppertal Institute's contribution to this work consists of carrying out a multi-criteria-analysis and a ranking of the different electricity mix options under examination.
