Adapting Urban Transport to Climate Change

New module of the Sustainable Transport sourcebook

  • Publications 04.12.2009

With climate change, weather impacts on transport, such as flooding, subsidence and storms are expected to become more frequent and more extreme. Climate change will hence increase the number of days on which the transport system and the urban population are confronted with extreme stressors. Already today, transport systems in many developing cities are inadequate to cope well with such events. Since transport is the lifeline of any urban system, there is a need to act - also at the local level. Nevertheless, until now little attention has been paid to the vulnerabilities of urban transport networks to climate change and how to make them more resilient.

The GTZ Sourcebook "Sustainable Transport" addresses the key areas of a sustainable transport policy framework for a developing city. It is developed within the "Sustainable Urban Transport Project" (SUTP) and consists of more than 27 modules. It is also complemented by a series of training documents.

The new module by Urda Eichhorst "Adapting urban transport to climate change" is intended to raise awareness amongst decision-makers in developing cities. It describes the expected impacts of climate change on urban passenger transport and provides an orientation on how to integrate climate proofing into urban transport planning and policy implementation. The module highlights synergies between adaptation and mitigation in urban transport planning as part of a sustainable urban development.
