CCS Global The Global Prospects of Carbon Capture and Storage Technologies in Emerging Countries |
Short description:
The study scrutinises to which degree geological conditions (namely the national potentials for underground CO2 storage) and CO2 sources (with focus on the power sector) encourage a broad deployment of carbon capture and storage and make the technology a reasonable option for carbon mitigation. For that purpose, three case studies - China, India, and South Africa - have been selected. All three countries indicate high shares of coal in their national energy supplies as well as rapidly growing energy demands. Since China, India, and South Africa are of high relevance for the international deployment of CCS, certain aspects related to the technology's market prospects in these countries were already covered by previous studies. However, no study has yet conducted a comprehensive assessment of the national CO2 storage potentials in each of the selected countries. Therefore, the new study of the Wuppertal Institute will make an important contribution to the analysis of international CO2 storage potentials and the global relevance of CCS.
Based on an investigation of the global development of CCS and its role in international CO2 mitigation scenarios, the study will comprise an in-depth analysis of the current energy situation, the use of fossil fuels, and projected CO2 emissions in the selected key countries until 2050. These data will be used to estimate the quantity of CO2 that needs to be captured during that period of time. In a next step, CO2 storage potentials for each of the three countries will be critically analysed. The evaluation of the storage potential will be supplemented by an economic, ecological, and resources-strategic technology assessment of CCS. Furthermore, the study aims at sketching a constellation of stakeholders involved in the process of CCS deployment in order to identify driving forces and barriers for the technology's implementation in China, India, and South Africa.
