Prof. Dr. Peter Hennicke


Prof. Dr. Peter Hennicke, born 18 January 1942 in Landsberg/Warthe, Germany.
He studied chemistry and economics from 1962 to 1979 at the University of Heidelberg.
1977, doctorate, PhD at the University of Bremen. Postdoctoral qualification in Economic Policy with emphasis on Energy Policy in 1981 at the University of Osnabrück.

From 1970 to 1979: Research work at the Universities of Heidelberg and Osnabrück. Afterwards he worked at the planning department of a regional utility in Mannheim. Appointed as Professor at the University of Osnabrück. From 1986 to 1988 Consultant for Energy Policy at the Ministry of Environment in Hessen. Between 1987 and 1992, expert of the Enquiry Commission "Preventive Measures to Protect the Earth's Atmosphere" of the German Parliament (Deutscher Bundestag).

From 1988 to 1992 Peter Hennicke was Professor of Economics at the University of Applied Sciences Darmstadt. He undertook several research projects at the Institute for Applied Ecology in Freiburg.

In August 1994 he was appointed as Professor at the University of Wuppertal and at the same time granted a leave of absence to fulfil his duties as the Director of the Energy Division of the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy at the Science Centre of North Rhine-Westphalia. From 1998 to October 2000 he was Vice President of the Wuppertal Institute.

From 2000 to 2002, he was an expert of the Enquiry Commission "Sustainable Energy Supply under the Conditions of Globalisation and Liberalisation" of the 14th "Deutschen Bundestag".

From June 2002 until June 2006 he was a member of the Scientific & Technical Advisory Panel (STAP) of the Global Environment Facility (GEF).

Following the departure of the Founding President Ernst Ulrich von Weizsäcker in November 2000, Peter Hennicke continued the management of the Wuppertal Institute as the Acting President. Since April 2003 Prof. Dr. Peter Hennicke has been leading the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy as the President.

Due to age, his term of office ended on 31 January 2008, at the same time he became professor emeritus at Bergische Universität Wuppertal.

Professor Hennicke will still be available for the Wuppertal Institute with his scientific expertise i.a. within the scope of a project cooperation in the field of "Resource Efficiency".
